1. A tree hit by a lightning strike can explode. This happens because the enormous heat generate by the lightning strike vaporizes the sap of a tree and produces steam which then escapes by exploding the tree trunk.
2. The fear of lightning and thunder is known as astraphobia.
3. The average striking length of a regular lightning is about 2 to 3 miles and carries electricity of nearly 100 million volts.
4. Lightning without a thunder is impossible. This is because, thunder is actually the sound created by lightning.
5. Light travels faster than sound and that’s why lightning strike can be seen first and then the thunder can be heard. It is because of this speed difference between light and sound that it is actually possible to calculate the distance of storm.
6. Fulminology is the term used to describe the study of lightning.
7. Lightning strikes have an average lifespan of 1-2 microseconds.
8. A lightning bolt has a temperature of roughly 54,000 degrees Fahrenheit, which around 5 times hotter than Sun’s surface.
9. The speed of light is about 186,282 miles per second. The speed of sound is about 0.211 miles per second at sea level. So the light from a lightning bolt reaches us many orders of magnitude faster than the compression wave it creates.
10. Lightning never strikes twice in the same place is a misconception. The Empire State building in New York is struck on average of 24 times per year.

I could see a tree where thunder had fallen. It was split and blackened.
Yes I too have seen many trees struck as well.
Interesting facts about lightning. At such a high voltage, a person struck by it can become paralyzed or a percentage degree of their body burned due its huge voltage.
Yes and it can cause death as well. Very dangerous.

I love violent storms when I can watch them from the inside and be safe. Very interesting facts. I would think most everyone knows not to seek shelter under trees during a thunderstorm. However, one summer in Latvia a very sad event took place. A sudden and violent thunderstorm started and a man in the city was caught wheeling his daughter in her carriage through the park. He chose to stand under a large oak tree. The tree was zapped and he was dead instantly but his daughter in the carriage survived.
I don’t like being close to thunder or lightning but i enjoy the rain from inside. I know people who hav been struck standing under a tree. It happens.
