The world of small protable projectors!

I love projectors. I have had a projector in my home for more than 14 years. I have also chased several smaller projectors over the years. They are often called PICO projectors. Small, often handheld, and portable. From the generic first there are things you need to have for a project to be effective.

1. bility to project an image up to 100 inches in width

2. bility to project in some ambient light

3. onnections both wireless and HDMI

a.VGA or DVI is a value add, but few PICO projects offer that

b.HDMI mini works

c.Also supports Google Chromecast and Apple AirPlay

4. attery portable can’t require a plug!

5. mall enough to easily carry!

The very first project I ever bought was a ceiling mounted BenQ. It hung in our basement in Indiana, and I used it against a wall screen to practice presentations and to watch football games during the winter. Those old projects have changed too much better projects in a much smaller package. The first part of the functionality is what are you projecting. If you are project TV or DVD/Blu-Ray videos you have a different requirement than someone who is presenting pictures (my trip travelogue) or people that are projecting powerpoint slides. Based on the five things I look for (see the list above) I balance the brightness of the projector versus the ability to easily use the system.

I realize that my job affords me an opportunity to look at the tech up close. I got two of these projectors from the vendors so that I won’t do a review. As my review rules are I have to buy the item before I review it. I did buy the PicQ portable projector and will do an upcoming review with that. It is the first small projector that supports Apple Airplay (the others are based on AndroidTV and supports the Google Chrome case system). Overall I will say the following about the three PICO projects I’ve looked at:

•XGIMI – best overall projector. It actually can be used outdoors, although it has to be a somewhat shaded area!

•Capsule – best speakers, you can use this project as a speaker for your computer when you re out and about!

•PicQ – by far the smallest of the three projectors and the first that leverages apple airplay.

This is a technology area that I cover that most don’t care about. I understand that, but want to get the information out!

  1. I have my Dad’s old projector. I also had the film put onto a CD. Such great memories on that CD. But I never had the projector in working order.
