While out taking my walk yesterday I noticed the buffalo are still roaming the field behind the house. There are new homes being built but for now they still have their field. I hope they continue roaming wild. They are incredible to see up close. Massive animals and I am glad there was a fence between us. I managed to quickly snap this photo.
Learned something today. What many people call the American buffalo is actually an animal named the American bison. True buffalos are different animals that live in Asia and Africa. American bison, on the other hand, live only in North America.
Now you know, in case you were wondering.

I certainly would not get close to such a ton of attitude.
I live in an agricultural area and someone near me was raising bison so I did walk by and see them. My son actually petted one while on a hike. As usual he was ahead of the group he was with and so he was with the beast before anyone could stop him. I think he must have been related to St. Francis of Assisi because the buffalo didn’t hurt him. And it was a wild one on Catalina Island.
I’ve only seen American bison at Safari Park in East Java
Beautiful animals … I have not seen them yet
Yes they are massive animals.
I believe what are pictured here are Bison. They are amazing and interesting animals. They provided much for my ancestors.
Yes that is what I was saying, after I researched it is bison.
My daughter sees them almost every day when she goes to work. Her route takes her right by the national bison range. Yes, they are huge; much larger than most people think. One of the bulls can be around a ton.
Oh wow how lucky to live in such a place Rex. Where the buffalo roam. Paradise.
Bison are massive! Their heads alone are like five feet tall…
Yes they are especially up close. We were about the same height looking eye to eye.
up close? you are confronted with the irrefutable fact that it would take a dozen of you to match a bison
Yes you are right but I had to get close. I could hear them breathing, eye to eye. But the fence was there…
I’ve also done this with a fence intervening and it was still damn unnerving. A colleague of mine did it without the fence, but it wasn’t intentional…
Carol only cows live in our country, and buffalo are probably in the zoo
Oh ok, these are roaming wild nearby. Very cool.
I believe – I know them from cowboy films
Yes I am sure you do!
