Sharing a photo for Friday’s Black & White challenge. These bird eggs are called Killdeer eggs. Killdeer birds usually visit open areas such as water shores and fields. They are probably most familiar around towns, where they live on lawns, driveways, parking lots, and often airports.
You can find Killdeer near water, but unlike many other shorebirds, they are also common in dry areas. There is no water around, so they visit rarely and I have often almost stepped on their eggs.
The eggs are laid on the ground. Imagine that, the eggs are laid on the open ground. No nest building! These eggs in the photo were laid beside my driveway. They are black and white, but I have shared the color version as well to show you how easy it would be to step on these eggs. Many of the eggs do not survive for this reason.
More interesting nature facts I have learned in my yard by observing and researching. I also shared a photo of a killdeer. You may have seen this bird around water. They make very loud, mostly annoying high pitched sounds. I always think they are out of place around my house and should be around water.

We don’t get killdeer in New Zealand. Nice bird.
We have many killdeer here and this is the first time I have seen the eggs. Thanks for sharing.
They are so cool to watch.
I’ve seen the bird and the eggs live and in person. But i love your picture you are right in color the eggs are more visible very cool!!!!
Yes but even in color they really blend into the background. A miracle they survive.
Nature is amazing at hiding things in plain sight!
Oh wow, I have never seen the eggs. So cool. I love to watch them running in the shallow beach water here. They are funny to watch. They almost look like a cartoon when they move.
The eggs blend almost too well. Many do not survive.
Beautiful picture collection , Thank you for sharing
Thanks for visiting I appreciate your kindness.
Beautiful pictures. I have not seen this yet. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks and another lesson learned in my yard. Watch where you step!
I do not know these birds, my dear friend … but they are very beautiful
They are not very common in my area but I do see them.
Kildeers are cool. Have you ever seen one do the “broken wing” routine to keep you away from the nest?
Yes I have and I forgot to mention that in this post. They are survivors for sure. When I first saw this behavior I had to reach it. Amazing right!
I actually wrote about this behavior in this post: https://virily.com/challenges/mystery-behavior-solved-day-184/#comment-605744
