A few mornings ago, there was this sound. It sounded like a wounded sea gull, and very very loud. It sounded as if it was sitting inside with me.
When I looked out my sliding glass door it took me a minute to find where the sound was coming from. The giant Eucalyptus tree just outside of the fence for the back yard.
I grabbed the camera and went outside took one fast click, just in case it flew away. My luck was with me. It stayed for about fifteen minutes!!
This is a baby, just under a year old. The sounds I heard was it calling. And it did sound like a sick sea gull. The funniest sound I have ever heard.

I knew it was a raptor, but can’t tell a hawk from a falcon
Falcons are tiny compared to the red tail. They look about the same though in markings.
can’t really infer scale from this photo
Ah but you can Alex, only if you know the size of a Euc leaf! 😉
not unless I know that’s a full grown tree, which I also can’t infer from the photo…
He is really majestic!!! Once seen a red tailed hawk flying, wish very much to see him a little bit closer.
Thank you Anastasia. This one was maybe twenty feet away from me. Remarkable that it stayed for so long. I was so happy.
Its a lovely Falcon, I only see the odd Harrier Hawk. So I made a special trip to view our NZ Falcon
Ah yes, its funny she appeared right after your post about the NZ one. Yup, I would still like to do that… Just for a summer or season. It would be so neat to learn.
Wingspan does a good thing for New Zealand birds of prey and I learned so much from even going once.
Wonderful capture , that’s really great
Thank you Witty! I felt so lucky. 😀
Wow!
He looks quite handsome up there on the tree …
do you’ve beautiful ladies in your house?
Yes he does! It was so cool to see him so close and for so long.
The only beautiful ladies here are my mom and I. 😉 hehehe
It’s some kind of falcon. You just had the good fortune to take these great pictures. Congratulations.
Yes, a red tailed hawk is what we call them here. Thank you. I had coffee with him or her. She stayed there for a long time, almost 15 minutes. 🙂
Wow how lucky can you get Kim. I used to see these often fly over the fields behind my house.e Now there are nothing but houses there. So I never see them any more. What a great eye you have. Love these guys!
Thank you Carol. I remember that one you got pics of. You were worried about your bluebirds. I guess it moved to higher ground so to speak.
It happened here as well, the open land by the waterfall has 500 new houses. That’s why I was so glad to see one again.
