Sky Sunday – Are sunrises and sunsets different?

All “twilight phenomena” are symmetrical on both opposite sides of the Earth and occur in the reverse order between sunset and sunrise. This means that there is no innate, natural reason for the existence of an optical difference between them and we should not be able to distinguish them. .. And yet, two human factors can break this symmetry.

The first is in our heads. At sunset, our eyes are accustomed to daylight and even tired from work during the day. When the light disappears, we cannot adapt as quickly as the sky darkens, so some nuances can be lost or interpreted in a strange way. On the contrary, at sunrise we have inherited from the darkness of the night sharp night vision, and any even slight, insignificant change in the colors of the sky is obvious. In short, the human eye can perceive more colors at dawn than in the evening.

The other human factor that can differentiate between the two solar phases is pollution. At sunset the sky is full of vapors and particles brought by the wind. At night, the winds subside, industrial activity dies down and the atmosphere clears. So the morning is clearer, cleaner than any other time of the day.
