Glass Domes – Themes by the Month

I can’t believe it’s almost February, time really flies! This is the last day of the January edition of Kim’s challenge Themes by the month. The topic for January was Shadows; I wonder what the new topic will be.

These glass domes cover the open-air museum of the ruins of the Ancient Thracian and Roman city in Sofia, Bulgaria. It’s not a surprise that there are many Roman remains in Sofia: around 29 B.C., the city was conquered by the Romans and renamed Ulpia Serdica. It became a municipium (centre of an administrative region) during the reign of Emperor Trajan (98-117). Later, Serdica became the capital of the province of Dacia Mediterranea.

The glass domes are 2.1 meters high and 60 meters long. Their thickness is about 1.7 cm, and they should be able to sustain a weight of 250 kg. The total area of the domes is about 800 square meters.
