Carol's Backyard Birds ~ Grackle

Picking up a series I started awhile back with the backyard birds I see almost every day.

Snapped a photo of a Grackle at my deck feeder. They do not visit often but when they do, they take over and do not allow other birds to eat. But the Blue Jays and Cardinals wait patiently until they are gone.

Common Grackles are large blackbirds with long legs and long tails. The head is flat and the bill is longer than in most blackbirds, with a downward curve. In flight, the wings appear short in comparison to the tail. Males are slightly larger than females.

You can see the shimmering blue on the upper body in this photo. That tells you it is a grackle. They are in the blackbird family, but sometimes confused with other varieties such as Brewer’s blackbird, Cowbirds and Starlings.
