Picking up a series I started awhile back with the backyard birds I see almost every day.
Snapped a photo of a Grackle at my deck feeder. They do not visit often but when they do, they take over and do not allow other birds to eat. But the Blue Jays and Cardinals wait patiently until they are gone.
Common Grackles are large blackbirds with long legs and long tails. The head is flat and the bill is longer than in most blackbirds, with a downward curve. In flight, the wings appear short in comparison to the tail. Males are slightly larger than females.
You can see the shimmering blue on the upper body in this photo. That tells you it is a grackle. They are in the blackbird family, but sometimes confused with other varieties such as Brewer’s blackbird, Cowbirds and Starlings.

Very nice bird, but never seen it before. And my favorite backyard bird is a titmouse.
Unfortunately, only crows and hearts are flying around me … sparrows are still banned
I do not like the sparrows. Many others are here to see thankfully.
i was ready camera in hand, but sadly the feeder was empty and i did not see the birds!
I love the Hawks that fly over head they do from time to time hang out in our backyard.
Oh well, keep trying. It can be a challenge. I see the hawks too.
Great capture Carol. My favorite backyard bird is the Golden oriole. I haven’t seen one in the last year. I hope I will see them soon.
Thank you Dawn, I was inside behind the patio doors. Never seen an Oriole, they are gorgeous.
I wonderful capture I love what the bird looks like
Thanks, taken from behind my patio doors.
Such a gorgeous capture! My favorites of the ones that visit us are blue tits, chaffinches, siskins, Eurasian jays and bramblings.
Thanks, I took it from behind the patio doors.
We don’t have that many species of beautiful birds. So I have no favorite.
You can just enjoy mine. 🙂
The blue color makes this bird so beautiful.
It really looks pretty in the sunlight.
