Zimbrul – The European Bison

The European bison ( Zimbrul in romanian language) is the heaviest surviving wild land animal in Europe. A typical European bison is about 2.1 to 3.5 m long.

The European bison (Bison bonasus), is a Eurasian species of bison. It is one of two extant species of bison, alongside the American bison. Three subspecies existed in the recent past, but only one survives today. In Romania the bison is a protected specie.

The Neagra Bison Reservation is located very closed to my hometown, Targoviste and closed to Bucharest, the capital of Romania. It is the perfect place for nature lovers and families to hang out and enjoy spending some quality time. The reservation is in the middle of the forest, very well maintained.

We went to the reservation on a day trip. Got there in the afternoon to admire these giants.

It was the first time for me and my family  to see such beautiful animal, the Bison. One in a lifetime opportunity to sit closed to such a rare animal.

Bisons are  lovely animals but, they are unpredictable and can be dangerous if you touch them through the fence. So, please, be careful.

  1. I didn’t know there were cousins out there. I had only heard of the American Bison we call the Buffalo, but it is not really a buffalo. Thank you for teaching me something new. I have been to a Bison ranch, in Tennessee, but never got that close.

  2. I have seen raccoons, hares, fox and deers up fairly close but a bison (whether European or North American) or even a moose I would stay clear of although I would enjoy seeing them from afar. Great pictures of a grand old breed…
