Do Dreams Have Meaning?

I had a dream about my father.  I can’t remember the last time I ever dreamed about my father.  But, this dream was trying to tell me something.  I know that for sure.  To fully understand the dream and its meaning.  I have to tell you, a little about my father’s mother.

My grandmother was a writer in her younger days.  She was one of the first female sports reporters in my area.  After, she got married; she left her career behind.  In her final years she was an antique dealer.  After her death, I was helping my father clean her house.  In a drew in her bedroom we found an unfinished manuscript.  My grandmother had been working on a book about collecting antiques.

In my dream,  I was walking through the woods with my father.  We were talking about life.  He told, me, I was more like his mother than I ever knew.  Not only did I have her beauty in my looks.  My father often would tell me, I was the only one of his children that had his mother’s lovely black hair.  But, I also had her talent for writing.   My talent differed from my grandmother’s.  I wrote poetry, articles and short stories.  But, I still got that writing talent from her.

In my dream my father said,  “Whatever you do, don’t be like your grandmother.  She never thought she was good enough to get her book published.  So, she left it sit.  I have a feeling that was the one thing she ever regretted about her life.  That she never gave her book the chance to be published.  Whatever you do, don’t be like her..

I never told you, but I was always proud of the way you were always writing, when you were a kid.  We all thought you were going to become an author.  Maybe, we should have told, you this when you were a kid.  I am very sorry that none of us ever did.

Please, no matter what you do.  At least follow that dream and try to get your works published.  If you don’t it will follow you into your next lifetime.  It will be something you regret.

The dream ended with my father dropping my grandmother’s unfinished book out of his hands and onto the floor.

This dream came at a strange time.  I had been writing online for over ten years.  Nothing was happening with it.  I was thinking it was time to end the whole writing thing.  It wasn’t working for me.  I tried one last thing.  I went back to writing poetry and short stories.  My blog has never done so well.

I have been thinking a lot about this though.  I have been thinking maybe it’s time for me to go to the next step and work on my novels.  What do you all think?  Do you think dreams have any meaning at all?

  1. I used to chase my dreams, years ago Omni Managine had an interesting article on shaping and controlling your dreams.

The question for you would do you smell something or heart something that reminded you of your father? I know when I listen to the radio some songs remind me of my dad!

  2. I agree with the other comments. When it’s a meaningful dream, like this one, you will feel it. It’s always better to try than wondering what would have happened if you tried. I wish you the best of luck! 🙂

  3. Long since I have read your profile, I really hope you write something about mysticism or meditation. As a mystic, I rarely read writings or books that arouse the thoughts of others, and I hope you can give something to the world about it. I myself write more such things here – though not in books – because something keeps pushing them from the inside.

I am sure you know that dreams are a journey, and that experience is real, so it is good to fulfill revelations from that dream and let the magic of your dreams and books work in their own way.

  4. Of course your dreams have meaning. You can tell the meaningful ones from the ones that are just gibberish. They are more tangible and detailed like the one you describe above which is clearly a loving warning that you need to have more confidence in yourself and follow through, just as your father said.

  5. No matter what age, you know that you are meant to publish. The problem is will the world read poems or something else? Since I know the something else and its popular right now, I would run with this.

I know you told me I inspired you, but you are also an inspiration for me, I remember you telling me to write my book and I have yet to do so….. maybe this is the winter to start it. 🙂

    • My book is not poetry. I was thinking about it, but changed my mind. Poetry has made a comeback and many people read it on blogs. I have done some research and like you said, they do not sell that well. I would recommend self publishing if an author wanted to publish a book of poetry. Believe me, I have tried for years and many different publishing houses. That was what recommend to me a few times.

Writing has always been my childhood dream and I am working on other book ideas. You should make a cookbook, I think it would do well.

  6. I had dreamt about something that is yet to happen. On the following day, the same thing happened exactly the way it appeared in my dream. There are really things that we can’t explain.

What I would suggest is for you to find your inner self. What do you really want to do? If working on something will make you feel complete, then go for it.

    • Sharon, I am a mystic and very much into meditation. One of the things I was thinking about writing about being booked on these subjects and more. It has been over a year ago since I had this dream and I am working on a book of poetry.

  7. Yes, I think Dreams can mean something special. I have had dreams of warning, and it saved my life. Your dream was one about fulfilling your dream, so go for it. I do believe it was speaking straight into your heart’s desire.

  8. I think you knew about the story that your grandmother did not finish her writing and publication until the end.
Then your mind realized that you are also doing the same dreamingly.
Every dream has a deep subconscious meaning to me.
Only a dream is quickly forgotten or it can not be interpreted properly.
But the mind sends us a message.
He follows his decision, and follows his dreams.

    • Wow, because my father was a photographer and that was his dream. He did fulfill what he wanted to do. And, my dream ever since I was a little girl was to write a novel. Yes, I did know about my grandmother’s unfinished book. I was the one who found it after she passed away.

It really doesn’t matter, because the point of the dream for me was for me to start working on my novels again. Something, that I have not done in years.

Thank-you for your insight it was very helpful.
