A Differential Insect ~ Day 304

I was picking some of my roses yesterday in Dustin’s garden to bring indoors. I almost touched this two inch long grasshopper because he was so blended into the rose leaves. Instead I snapped a few photos to share with you. Funny name for a grasshopper…. Differential (Melanoplus differentialis).

These grasshoppers are most prevalent in the central U.S. Their back legs also have spines on them. They have short, horned antennae and produce a buzzing noise by rubbing their hind wings against their forewings. Their tan and black coloring help them blend in with the tall dry grasses they eat. They can be destructive to plants and vegetables. They also feed on ragweed, which many of us are allergic to, so they can be beneficial in a sense as well. So far this year I have only seen this one.
