I was picking some of my roses yesterday in Dustin’s garden to bring indoors. I almost touched this two inch long grasshopper because he was so blended into the rose leaves. Instead I snapped a few photos to share with you. Funny name for a grasshopper…. Differential (Melanoplus differentialis).
These grasshoppers are most prevalent in the central U.S. Their back legs also have spines on them. They have short, horned antennae and produce a buzzing noise by rubbing their hind wings against their forewings. Their tan and black coloring help them blend in with the tall dry grasses they eat. They can be destructive to plants and vegetables. They also feed on ragweed, which many of us are allergic to, so they can be beneficial in a sense as well. So far this year I have only seen this one.

Have you seen a grasshopper in your yard or garden?
-
Yes
-
No
-
I sometimes find several types of them too in my garden
They are usually cool to see, however if you see several of these they can wipe your garden out.
You’re right. But usually, Popeye and Susie can’t just stay every time they see them.
Thanks for the training on this kind of grasshopper.
You are very welcome, thank you for the visit.
Yes, I sprayed them!! We had a bunch of babies. I found probably 20!
That’s what you have to do when see the little ones. Wow, that is a lot.
It is, I was horrified. They munched all night long. By morning there were holes everywhere.
They will eat the plant to the ground. I remember them eating my hibiscus one year. Like an invasion.
Yes they will. Remember the old photos of the destruction, wasnt it during the dust bowl in OK and Kansas?
We do have, but they are in small-size though.
Probably a different type of grasshopper.
I agree. In Asian countries, they are most likely small in size.
There are a lot of locusts here too – they are just lucky animals
Locusts are so annoying, so noisy!
The ones I see in my garden are usually green, the one you saw actually blends in very well with the rose stems.
I have green ones too but these are about twice the size. Thanks that is why I almost did not see him!
Have never seen this one before the ones I saw are usually green
This is a really big one, about two inches long.
OMG!!
I think i might just run from it lol
I ran for my camera very slowly.
The legs of this grasshopper are different from those that I use to see in my garden.
From my research the legs are a sure sign to tell it is a Differential grasshopper.
