The European bison ( Zimbrul in romanian language) is the heaviest surviving wild land animal in Europe. A typical European bison is about 2.1 to 3.5 m long.
The European bison (Bison bonasus), is a Eurasian species of bison. It is one of two extant species of bison, alongside the American bison. Three subspecies existed in the recent past, but only one survives today. In Romania the bison is a protected specie.
The Neagra Bison Reservation is located very closed to my hometown, Targoviste and closed to Bucharest, the capital of Romania. It is the perfect place for nature lovers and families to hang out and enjoy spending some quality time. The reservation is in the middle of the forest, very well maintained.

We went to the reservation on a day trip. Got there in the afternoon to admire these giants.

It was the first time for me and my family to see such beautiful animal, the Bison. One in a lifetime opportunity to sit closed to such a rare animal.
Bisons are lovely animals but, they are unpredictable and can be dangerous if you touch them through the fence. So, please, be careful.

I didn’t know there were cousins out there. I had only heard of the American Bison we call the Buffalo, but it is not really a buffalo. Thank you for teaching me something new. I have been to a Bison ranch, in Tennessee, but never got that close.
They are similar animals, but our Zimbru is smaller.
I thought they looked smaller, but it was hard to gauge from pictures. Way cool subject for sure.
I have never seen or heard of it. It looks huge.
It has a length of 2.9 – 3 meters and a height of 1.9 meters, weighing from 300 to 920 kg.
I have seen raccoons, hares, fox and deers up fairly close but a bison (whether European or North American) or even a moose I would stay clear of although I would enjoy seeing them from afar. Great pictures of a grand old breed…
We saw them and even fed them, but on the other side of the fence!?
Thank you for the photos and information. These bison seem to be cousins of the American bison
Yes . They are similar.Zimbrul is taller, but less massive than the American bison. It also has shorter hair.
We do not have bison in our country. I would not approach the bison.
As I know, they are found in protected areas of forests in Poland, Belarus and Moldova.
We don’t have these animals in England, but I do love them.
Zimbri are endangered animals. In Western Europe, they have disappeared since the eleventh century. In Romania they live only in reservations.
Rest assured – I have absolutely no intention of touching a bison!
They are gentle animals but unpredictable!
Looks like a massive creature.
What an adventure I would love to take. Great photos.
nice post! 🙂
Thank you!
