I was at Muriwai Gannet Colony yesterday for Auckland’s Anniversary day.
I would watch one gannet flying a circuit. It would hover in the air as if floating and then suddenly gather up speed. Then it would turn around by the tail as a rudder on the boat and its legs would go out to slow its descent.
Fabulous fliers and I believe they go 500 miles and back in a day to gather food.

For birds, the field is freedom
So true, they are free…Yet if you set a cage budgie free in New Zealand the other birds will kill it. Thanks Elenka.
Great capture. Nature always amazes me.
Thanks so much Carol, glad you like it.
Such an interesting bird, and a gorgeous capture! Birds in flight always amaze me.
Thanks Ellie glad you like it, the camera follows the bird..
i always look up at the patterns birds are flying. it tells you a lot about the wind and predators in the area!
Yes you are right Doc, the birds catch the thermal air and wind. Often the winds come from the South west. As for the predators, well Gannets are predators of fish.
Beautiful capture, Pamela!
Thanks so much Ileana, pleased you like it.
Not easy to caputre birds in flight You have done a great job
Yes you are right Grace, however, the Gannet has a definite pattern of flight. I caught the right moment.Thanks.
