I was at Muriwai Gannet Colony yesterday for Auckland’s Anniversary day.
I would watch one gannet flying a circuit. It would hover in the air as if floating and then suddenly gather up speed. Then it would turn around by the tail as a rudder on the boat and its legs would go out to slow its descent.
Fabulous fliers and I believe they go 500 miles and back in a day to gather food.

i always look up at the patterns birds are flying. it tells you a lot about the wind and predators in the area!
Yes you are right Doc, the birds catch the thermal air and wind. Often the winds come from the South west. As for the predators, well Gannets are predators of fish.
