Every year I make sure I have different colors of pansies in my garden. Cannot say which are my favorite color. I like the two colored ones, purple and yellow. And this soft orange is nice against the green foliage.
Continuing with Alibb’s Alphabet Crazy Challenge with the letter P.
They are very tough flowers, I am not sure how the name pansy came about for them. So I did some research. Interesting what I found out.
Pansies are one of the earliest flowering plants, blooming right alongside the spring bulbs. The name pansy is from the French word pensie, meaning thought or remembrance. The pansy is a delicate looking flower often with a “face”.
Now you know the rest of the story about pansies. Some of the blooms do look like a face. Very cool!

Hum, very interesting information that I did not know. I love the little faces, and the purples are my favorite, although this is so sunny and happy looking.
I know you liked the purple ones, me too! Especially the ones with purple and yellow.
it is interesting because the name for the flower has been made into an insult.
I wonder about that.

I have tiny violets too, but are so small you can barely see them but if you pick them and put them into a vase they smell divine..

I didn’t know the meaning of pansies, but I have noticed that they often have faces. They are a symbol of spring to me.
Isn’t it interesting to learn about nature around us! I have noticed with certain colors ( I will post more later), they do look like little faces. If you plant them from seed you can have them year round in some places.
This link talks about how to plant from seeds. I have never done this before. I think it may get too cold but I might give it a try….

Oh, that’s awesome, thank you so much for the link! I have never planted them or taken care of them, I think, but in my city, they plant them everywhere in the parks and gardens in spring;, they are the first flower that is massively planted here.

Rachel, I hope you see this link. It explains how to grow pansies year round from seeds. I buy the plants already blooming at the local nursery for spring gardens.
Pansies are surprisingly hearty in cold weather, though. They’ll survive a frost, bouncing back from even single digit temperatures. If the blooms wither in the cold, the plants will often stay alive to bloom again, which makes them a great flowering plant for fall and early winter color.

How much sun do pansies need in order to grow well?
Very little. They make great border plants and can grow in most conditions. I have even had these planted in the winter. Not sure why they are called pansies. They are very tough little plants.
