Short lived success of growing sweet potato

I had sliced off the piece of a sweet potato that had sprouted and planted it in a pot.  As luck would have it I saw it growing well.  When the leaves turned yellow I dug it up and was happy to see a full grown sweet potato.  That encouraged me to plant more cuttings of the vine that had grown.

It did show results but only to be destroyed by mongoose that we have seen in our garden. We got nothing for this effort.

We have now planted cuttings on a raised bed where I have noticed mongoose do not climb. Keeping my fingers crossed.  We should see results in a couple of months.

  1. Our sweet potato is the Kumara and I tried to grow it in an old clothes basket and it failed. I will have another go one day but I put the Agria potatoes in an old clothes basket and they are growing.
What is the secret of growing successful kumara I have yet to find out..maybe you know?

  2. Thatis sad loss for you Grace. It’s like my wife lovingly caring for some really healthy plants, coriander, corn, peppers, lettuce, and sweet potatoes, and the plants were just ready for harvesting when just 6 hours ago, hail came and flattened everything… Last season we got nothing either because bugs spoiled the lot. I could never be a farmer doing this year after year. They are very special people. On the one hand, Mother Nature is killing their efforts with drought and on the other hand, greedy people are murdering them and stealing them Some have been on their land for 400 years and are 6th and 7th generation farmers. In 25 years, 80,000 farmers have been reduced to 30,000 as a result of robberies and killings and the weather, these few that still exist must feed 65 million mouths.
