A first step is learning how to think about the capacity to remember. The majority of us need to fully realize that memory is actually a skill, not a gift. The power to recall knowledge can be built up if we exercise it.

  1. Yes, well, I have an unfair advantage. Besides being old, writing rhyme is a perfect memory exercise, crossword puzzles, sudoku, annagrams, crop circles, oh oops. Grin.

  2. 8 of 8. It could also be mentioned that several illnesses and deficiencies can cause memory loss or difficulties. Still, I’m continually trying to work on my memory.

    • Good job! Yes, that is true. For most of us the skill is something we can strengthen, however, if memory loss is an issue caregivers usually look first at the age group of the patient. For instance, a simply treated UTI in an elderly person can present the same as some symptoms of Alzheimer’s, and medicine/supplement interactions can do that at any age. There are many factors to consider when memory loss is a concern but as you say, working on training the brain to remember is something we do not need to give up on.
