There are 30 recognized genus Durio species, 9 of which produce edible fruit, with over 300 named varieties in Indonesia, 100 in Thailand and 100 in Malaysia. Only 1 species is available on the international market; other species are sold in their local regions. The Durian is native to Borneo and Sumatra.
It is characterized by its large size, strong odor and thorn-covered rind. It can grow up to 12 inches long and 6 inches in diameter and will weigh between 2-7 pounds. The smell has been described as rotten onions, turpentine and raw sewage. Durian has been banished from certain hotels and public transportation in southeast Asia. The odor can linger for days.
The flesh has been described as “a rich custard highly flavored with almonds”. The seeds can also be eaten when cooked.

Durian is one of my favorites. I am lucky that this fruit is abundant in my area.
I have read about this fruit but almost everything I read talked of the strong smell that can put off those who are not used to the fruit
Yes, that’s true…but the fruit is supposed to be good. “Rich custard highly flavored with almonds”. I personally don’t think I could get past the smell.
