Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Memorial Day 2018 occurs on Monday, May 28. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season.
This holiday weekend is the first of the year. It is always a huge weekend as many have Monday off, making it a three day weekend. Lots of travel and many gather for picnics. I plan to stay home away from the crowds and off the busy roads.

I only just found out what this holiday was on the internet. New Zealand and Australia have an equivalent called, “ANZAC” Day. Its been celebrated for any one involved in the military and in war all over the world. A small Christian service for them. Usually in New Zealand its all about the soldiers who served in Gallipoli World War one. I lost 2 great uncles one in Galipoli – one of my great uncles survived Galipoli and the other one died in the Somme.
Any one who goes to War is brave or just has to be. Its a way of acknowledging what they gave up to fight for freedom.
Dont much like war but it happens and sometimes its a job that has to be done.
Thank you for sharing this post! I have heard of it but I wasn’t sure about the meaning of this day.
You are welcome Ellie, an American very important holiday.
It’s a very stunning picture. We should honor those.
Yes it is and it takes my breath away seeing it each year. Some gave all.
It’s similar to the Heroes Day in my country that is commemorated every November 10, and it just happens to be the same date as my wife’s birthday. Hehe…
We have a holiday in November as well. In the USA, Veterans Day annually falls on November 11. This day is the anniversary of the signing of the armistice, which ended the World War I hostilities between the Allied nations and Germany in 1918. Veterans are thanked for their services to the United States on Veterans Day.
Yes, I remember you posted it last November, and it coincided with my brother’s birthday. In Indonesia, we commemorate the veterans’ day on 10 August to commemorate the ceasefire on August 10, 1949, after the Indonesian Independence Fighters against the Dutch Army.
I do remember, wow how time flies.
Time is running very fast, is not it?
Yes… slow it down please!
This was really something new for me , Thanks for sharing
It is for a lot of others as well, had to share. Some men gave all for their country.
It is a very special day for us in the US.
I did not know anything about this day. Thank you for the information.
