Memorial Day Weekend ~ Day 191

Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Memorial Day 2018 occurs on Monday, May 28. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season.

This holiday weekend is the first of the year. It is always a huge weekend as many have Monday off, making it a three day weekend. Lots of travel and many gather for picnics. I plan to stay home away from the crowds and off the busy roads.

  1. I only just found out what this holiday was on the internet. New Zealand and Australia have an equivalent called, “ANZAC” Day. Its been celebrated for any one involved in the military and in war all over the world. A small Christian service for them. Usually in New Zealand its all about the soldiers who served in Gallipoli World War one. I lost 2 great uncles one in Galipoli – one of my great uncles survived Galipoli and the other one died in the Somme.
Any one who goes to War is brave or just has to be. Its a way of acknowledging what they gave up to fight for freedom.
Dont much like war but it happens and sometimes its a job that has to be done.
