The last of the silence
filling the room
like water
sloshing around
spilling over the
edge
to
damage the floor
and
there is no more
silence.
Do
you
in seeking
what was
in
driving the
water
from the
floor and seeking
a missing towel
sopping
up the water
spilled
to fill
the empty silence again…

Silence is kind of an empty feeling which makes me think “What do I do next?”
That is a great line you have, what do I do next. I will have to remember that!
My pleasure to share some good ideas on this site.
Thanks – that is the best sense of community!!!
interesting use of silence as a thing, as opposed to a lack of sound
It comes from a poem I read many years, tin ears cupped. The sound would have to have a presence to touch tin ears.
Silence is the lack of sound, as darkness is the absence of sound. Yet sometimes they seem become things in their own right. I suspect this is because our senses are attuned to sensing things and not the lack of things…
That is such an interesting point, Alex. We do “trust” our senses. So the presence of absence makes it hard to reconcile what we “sense”. Awesome!
our need for sensory input is so deep that in a state of sensory deprivation, we begin to hallucinate…
There was an awesome movie about that and book, but I don’t recall the name.
are you by chance referring to Altered States?
Ah yes, I had forgotten the name. It’s been years since I watched Altered States!
That film and Jacob’s Ladder were so ahead of their time…
Wonderful verse. My poetry keeps the silence for becoming too loud and I enjoy creating when inspiration strikes. Just came out with my second book of poems.
That is awesome, there is a magic in poetry that allows us to move beyond where we are to somewhere else!
Nice poem Doc. I find myself filling the empty silence often.
Silence is tough sometimes, I seek it often, but reject it often as well.
