How Weather Affects Our Mood

Weather seems to have a real and measurable impact on many people’s mood, but is dependent upon many factors. The impact of the weather is probably going to be greater in any geographic location that experiences lengthy periods of unusual weather.

For instance, if it’s hot and sunny for months on end, that’s probably going to make more of an impact in Seattle, Washington (a usually rainy and cool place to live) than in Miami, Florida (a usually hot and sunny place to live). It may also depend upon your “weather personality type,” but that needs further research to confirm.

Researchers have found that men responded to unexpected weather by simply changing their plans. Raining? Let’s stay in instead of going for a hike. Unexpectedly warm day? Let’s take advantage of it by going to the water park or beach. Women, on the other hand, didn’t seem as likely to modify their activities, thereby more often taking the brunt of the unexpected weather on their mood.

  1. Yes, it is said weather affects us. It seems people in the north of Europe (colder countries) (Sweden, Iceland, Finland, Norway) commit suicide more times than other people in other countries because they are not so joyful and people from the South of Europe (sunny countries) (Portugal, Greece, Spain, Italy) are happier but also lazier. But sometimes fame does not reflect the truth.

  2. I didn’t realize that there was a science to it but the only time weather ever changed my plans was when I knew it would be dangerous to leave the house like a hurricane or a blizzard. Otherwise, if I had to get things done I worked right through the weather.

  3. Nice photo. I have to agree. I look outside and it’s gray or raining and I spend half the day working at my PC and some of the time resting and reading. Then I see the sun start to shine and I feel like going outside.

  4. Wonderful photo, the drops of water look like gems. Your last paragraph reminded me of the following anecdote:

A man to his girlfriend on the phone:
    – Honey, I love you. I would do anything for you. I will fight anyone who tries to hurt you. I will go to the end of the world for you.
    – You are so sweet, come over.
    – Now? Are you crazy it’s raining!
