Birds are scrounging around in the winter looking for food. I put out feeders to help them as much as possible. I also have holly bushes all around my home. They produce these tiny red berries that birds love.
They will eat wild berries all year long but especially during the winter when food is scarce.
Most of the Holly plants have separate male plants and female plants, and only the female plants will produce the berries. Some berries can be toxic to cats and dogs but are safe for birds. The animals seem to know this.
More of the little things about nature you may not have known. I try to help the birds out as I want to see them return in the spring and raise babies. And I want them to survive. I just wish others would do their part.

Seeing how much they eat, I wonder where they find food when there are no feeders. Feeders definitely make their life easier though.
I agree with your first question , in winter birds have shortage of food and we must drop some food near our home or at roof top in order to make birds easy to have food.
Yes they are looking for food this time of year when the insects and worms are gone. I also put out peanut butter for some of them to enjoy.
There is this writer on Virily, i think her name is Carol, that convinced me about three years ago to put out food for birds.
I had to hide it, so the crows didn’t eat it all, so it is nestled in the back fence line trees. I fill it at least once a week all winter long.
have you read any of Carol’s works about birds? She writes just like you do!
You are so funny. I will continue reminding everyone to feed the birds. Good for you and the food you put out. I actually made some homemade peanut butte suet for the woodpeckers.

I understand. And my cats are sleeping, they could care less about the rain. They have food.
I didn’t know that holly berries are edible for the birds. It is like the berries of the picus tree here.
Yes they are, they actually start collecting them in the fall and hiding them away for the winter. Amazing, right! And yes, the ones here are poisonous but not for the birds.
I think they would survive anyway, but I love feeding them, birds bring joy to me.
Sure they might, others might not if they have no food. I choose to help them. 🙂
Birds certainly lack food in winter. Therefore, we have good people to help them.

If it is a severe winter and there is a lot of snow, there is probably little bird food and it is nice if we help them a little too
