Yes the rain has finally arrived at my house! My rain dance has paid off. And the birds are happy too. Cardinals are in my backyard and deck feeder all year. As long as they have sunflower seeds and fresh water, they seem to be satisfied. This was the first year to see babies in my yard. I always said my Dad sent his cardinals this way after he passed last year. He always had a yard full of cardinals. We talked about them almost every conversation we had. He called them his redbirds.
After the breeding season is over and the last of the young are able to feed themselves, the adults look a little ragged. They begin their fall molt, and by winter have a new set of feathers so that they will be well insulated against the cold weather.
Winter Cardinals are bright, crisp and fresh looking. The male’s beautiful colors help him establish a good territory in order to attract a prospective mate. In early spring the whole cycle begins again.
All of these photos were taken a few minutes ago through my patio door in the rain. Not very sharp but the best I could do without getting soaked. They look a little wilted but remember it has been raining since yesterday. The first photo is called… The Three Amigos…

I love the title Carol. It could be the title of a romantic poem, novel and even a movie. Plus the photo is perfect.
Thank you Bradley, and that is a great idea. I need to start writing more.
That photo is perfect enough for a magazine cover. I would frame it!
You are too kind, it was taken from inside in the rain. Thanks!
A delightful photo. Thanks for sharing! So glad you had some refreshing rain!
Thanks and good to see you. The rain is great.
I also have a bird house in the garden – I just do not have cardinals
Good for you, what kind of birds do you have lado?
There are many species of birds – most sparrows, little dogs, – I do not know at all
That is great to see a variety of birds
Fascinating. I really love your bird pictures.
Thanks! I cannot wait for the molting to be over and they will be their bright red beautiful color again.
hahaha, that’s wonderful, and very positive.
I wish I could feed the birds but the neighbors would complain about bird poo. After all they complained about me feeding the squirrels stating that they found peanuts and poo in their garages. It is too bad but I am quite “mad” at the neighbors but what can I do about it. Living in a condo building is not the same as a single house. BTW your birds photo shoot are tremendous and very good despite the rain. Also thank you about the information on the daddy cardinals feeding their young. It is about time that men do some baby work.
I am sorry about your situation. I will feed mine thinking of you. I’ll throw some extra seeds. You are so kind. I was inside shooting the photos through the glass door in the rain. Surprised they even turned out. I always enjoy learning about the birds.
Very interesting information! Great photos though 🙂 Thank you for sharing!!
Thanks, I thought it was interesting to learn.
I tried several times to provide feed for birds in my yards and visiting birds are usually a sparrow or spotted dove.
Keep trying, you never know when the birds will start to appear. I see different ones every year. Sunflower seeds are what most of them like here. Good luck.
Thanks for your advice, I’ll do it again.
Of course since we are a world apart, not sure what your birds like, but it is worth a shot!
Well, I will do it again, and hopefully, there is a life that also loves me as love given to you.
Oh, the male do the feeding?
that’s interesting…
Yes isn’t that funny? Never seen this behavior before.
Usually the female does all the work.
Nice pictures! I can feel like I’m there
Thank you Mary for the comment.
