It is something that is very difficult to prove and I have read an interesting book that provides a completely different theory. I don’t think we will ever really know.
There are so many speculations when it comes to history. The problem is the proof.
Interesting theory but I don’t believe it.
There’s another, pretty much discredited, theory that I find interesting since I live in Chicago: Jack the Ripper and H.H. Holmes are one in the same. Holmes was active in Chicago in 1893. He built his murder mansion on Chicago’s South Side and lured dozens of women to their death there. There is a fantastic book called “The Devil in the White City” about it. White City refers to the World’s Columbian Exposition which also took place in Chicago that year. I highly recommend it.

There are reams of information and some pretty convincing clues. However, the information I collected was highly condensed for quick reading. I believe so too Carol. What inspired me to share, was the wikipedia.com history of personal skills mentioned above.

I answered Yes, in that it was physically possible for Doyle to have been in the right place at the time, but one has to wonder at why he would suddenly turn to grisly murder and just as suddenly stop doing so and return to respectability. I’m not aware of any of the Sherlock Holmes stories that cross paths with the Whitechapel murders in any respect.
Hello John, Your query prompted a revisit and while some sources seem to suggest the possibility that the the Ripper is mentioned in one of Holmes’s books, but in spite of this, my brief fact checking turned up nothing.
