Over the years I have stopped to capture images of flowers many times. These were near our house in Indiana and were taken in 2004. A couple of them, are probably some of the best pictures I captured of flowers that year. The red flower that starts this collection is one of my favorite flower pictures of all time. I am not a great photographer, but I love taking pictures. I figure take as many as you can, one of them will probably be good! My mother-in-law was a much better photographer than I was. But for every picture she took, I got 20. Mostly of people intentionally moving from where they had been placed or making faces when she wasn’t looking. The perfect picture is out there, but it isn’t the only picture.
Chasing perfection is an arduous task. Perhaps it should have been one of the 12 labors of Hercules, but since perfection is impossible, chasing it would have ended the quest. It would, chasing perfection, have never been completed. Hercules would still be chasing it. The imperfection of the world around us makes for more interesting pictures anyway. Sharing the imperfection and talking about the pictures is critical. I’ve been an advocate of IP management systems for more than 20 years. I know so many smart people that believe their smart is the perfection of the knowledge they have. Therefore that knowledge is protected with passcodes and never shared. Ther is no greater loss in this world than information that dies with a person.
The same is true of pictures. Share your great pictures. Share your bad pictures. Share the pictures of the lens cap. In the words of the Carpenters song “Sing a Song” don’t worry if it’s not good enough. Who cares if the picture you are sharing is perfect. You will chase perfection the rest of your life. Be happy at the moment you captured. Perfect, as we often say in the IT world, is the enemy of done. 20 pictures taken within seconds of each other may seem overkill, and it may truly be. But there are subtle differences in every frame captured. As I said, be happy with the moment you capture and share those. If someone says that picture is blurry or not good enough, that isn’t your problem, it’s their perfection speaking. Since none of us can be perfect then you know, it isn’t worth worrying about what they say! There are so many stories with pictures 1000 words they say. Sadly, of my father’s 50,000 or so pictures he shared less than 1500 with us. That means we are missing more than a million of his words. How many words has the world not heard from you?
