As we wander today in both time and space, we go back to Indiana. Of course, based on the movie Hoosiers, what else could be more Hoosier like than basketball. The boys and Jakki both played basketball for a time when we moved back to Indiana. Basketball is a huge component of what Hoosier’s are known for. Starting with Indiana University (5 time NCAA Men’s Basketball Champions and the Woman of Purdue 1 time NCAA Woman’s National Champion) but also legends and lore including the history of Milan and the small High School that slew a mighty (and significantly larger school) in the Indiana High Basketball tournament.
Growing up in Idnaian you are exposed to basketball. The iconic pictures of Basketball goals nailed inside or outside of barns are everywhere. Jakki played in a league hosted by a church the year we moved back to Indiana. The boys played in the YMCA league two or three years later. I was never good at basketball other than understanding how to set a pick, and how to pass the ball. My wife also was not a basketball player.
None of the kids stuck with basketball much beyond the images you will see in the next few months. The boys played two years; my daughter only played the first year. Over time they, the kids wandered away from sports. There are many things in the world that we can enjoy. Sports is certainly something to enjoy. But not enjoying sports is all right. We don’t have to enjoy sports we can enjoy many other things. But in Indiana, Basketball is still the sport of dreams.
