The Port of Constanta

The port of Constanta is located on the western coast of the Black Sea. It is about 332 km from the Bosforus Strait and 157 km from Sulina Branch through which the Danube river flows into the sea. It is the second largest port on the Black sea. Constanta old name was Tomis, an old Greek colony founded in the 6th century BC. The Greek influence is maintained until the 11th century BC when the territory was occupied by the Romans. Here, the roman poet Ovidiu  was exilated.

In the next hundred years, the port had a substantial development. Next due to the frequent invasions by migratory people the trade was fading and the traders were looking for others more secure market like Venice,Genoa. After that port was occupied by Ottoman Empire. In 1896 Carol 1 set the first stepping stone for the construction and modernization of the port. Was finished in 1909. Than the port was expanded to the south. In 1984 Danube-Black Sea canal was open which had a major role in the development of the port.
