When I was little, my mother taught me this rhyme:
A red sky at night is a sailor’s delight.
A red sky in the morning is a sailor’s warning.
I always suspected that the sky would be red, no matter what the weather. But I used to love watching the sunrise and sunset whenever I could.
These images were made from some old low-resolution photos I took near St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, in Quebec’s Montérégie. Using the old tech, they looked pretty great. But today they just look blurry. Instead of throwing them away, I decided to play with them and see if I could improve them.
I used an oil painting effect in an app called IrfanView. This softened the edges and made a sort of Impressionistic version of the scenes. The images are now more subtle and muted. Not a Monet, by any means, but not bad! What do you think?
Feel free to add your own sunsets or sunrises. You can also vote up whichever images you like best. Enjoy!
#1 Clouds Gathering
The sun was setting behind the barn and some dark clouds were gathering. The wind was picking up when I took the photo. It tugged at the branches of the mulberry tree on the left and the little flag in the background.
We did get a thunderstorm that evening - a big one with high winds and crashing thunder that rocked the house. And then suddenly, it was all over. The air cleared and everything smelled fresh and clean. Even the birds came back out and chirped before bedtime.
