On May 24,1965 my brother Peter enlisted in the United States Army. Both of my brothers were in the service & I was at home. I would start 1st Grade that September. Private First Class Peter Pallazola would return from Boot Camp and I would hang on to every word of his stories of Army life. I asked mom and dad for GI Joes that Christmas.
In November 1966 Peter was deployed to Pleiku, Vietnam and shortly after that Joe was sent to Danang. We had a huge wall map of Vietnam hanging in our kitchen. Pushpins marked where my brothers were and we watched Walter Cronkite every night to see where the fighting was, praying they would be kept out of harms way.

Kodak Color Film…they had a plant in Peabody in the 1960s, my dad swore by their film…

Did Peter succeed in his assignment in Vietnam, Paul?
I guess the best measure of success is that Peter returned from that terrible conflict alive. Over 58,000 Americans and one million Vietnamese people died in that war. My brother was scarred with Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome that resulted in a psychiatric admission to Veteran’s Administration Hospital in 1985 (See my earlier post Going To Bat For My War Hero)…
