Bluebirds Returned ~ Day 134

Today is a good day. The bluebirds have returned to my backyard bluebird house. They came a few weeks ago but apparently were not ready to build a nest. I have been watching both the male and female all morning. They are starting a nest of pine straw. The sparrows are still coming around. I am helping the bluebirds by chasing the sparrows away. It is a struggle for these birds to survive. I always think of how they do it in the wild without my help. Some babies make it, others do not. That is nature. But I will continue helping as much as I can raise as many bluebird families as possible in my backyard My Bluebirds of Happiness!

I am continuing with the 365 Photos Challenge and I am now on Day 134.

#1 Male and Female claiming their bluebird house.

So cool to see both the male and female claiming their house in my backyard. Captured this photo through my glass patio doors. Will try to get more photos later on my deck.

  1. Oh yay! They came back. Perhaps the hawks are gone now. Good to hear they are building. Now we will have so many great shots to see in the future.

    • Yes but I am still helping chase the sparrows away and they are building a nest on top of the bluebird’s nest, I clean it out several times a day. 🙁 But this happens every year.

#2 Female Bluebird

Funny how these bluebird couples are like married couples in a way. Sometimes the male builds the nest, does all the work, other times it is the female. This couple has the female with the pine straw in her mouth (if you look close you can see the pine straw) while the male is chasing off the sparrows. That is a good plan. Better photos to come hopefully, as this progresses.

  1. Each post asks, “What do you think” . I think that I am so happy they returned I was worried about the hawks chasing them away. Great shots, I love your bluebird photos. Keep em coming, can’t wait for more.

  2. Great photos of beautiful birds. I do not think I have ever seen these birds in the Outaouais valley where I reside. We have cardinals, bluejays, sparrows (of course), ducks (which sometimes knock at the patio door for some food) and of course seagulls and our great Canadian geese. But no bluebirds. But we have “carouges a epaulettes”. Sorry I do not know their English word. But thank you for a beautiful and spring looking post.

    • You have a great variety of other birds for sure. I love the bluebirds. I seem to have a connection with them. Bird lady here. 🙂 Thank you for commenting.

    • Thanks Albert. They usually have 2-3 broods (families) per year. I usually start seeing them around March-April, then the last brood is usually July-August. It all depends on the weather too. A lot of variables, predators, etc.
