Shi Shi Zhi Xin – giclee print

I wanted to use crepuscular lighting to indicate a supernatural event. Uncertain how successful that was but at least it produced a nice result which I suppose is the most important thing…

#1 release version

The title translates from Mandarin as "Heart of a Lion" and is influenced by the old Chinese kung fu books. Here one of the temple guardians has changed into a human for some reason or another...

#2 stone lion reference

This is a render test of the other stone lion. Ended up going with a granite look as opposed to marble

#3 statue render

Speaking of statues, here's the statue render for this piece. I'm still not entirely satisfied with the lighting scheme but it does work for the piece

#4 rough sketch

and finally the rough sketch, done with vermilion ink on rice paper

It seems almost perfect as you wish. My stupid question as usual; is her face slightly different between release version, statue render and rough sketch?

  The statue render is always going to look a little different; she has no texture at all. The rough sketch may or may not resemble the final, that’s going to be dependent upon technique
