Many backyard birds visit my deck feeder. During the winter months there is not a lot of food for them, so they are attracted to the sunflower seeds and peanuts. The cardinals are very smart. They are the first to visit, right at daylight in the mornings, throughout the day, and then right before dark. They seem to choose the times when the other birds are not around.
The males are a bright red and stunning to see. This is a female, smaller and much more subtle than the male.

Cardinal is really one great bird ….. I have a very normal day my friend
I agree, they are beauties for sure.
She’s gorgeous too! Lovely capture!
Thanks, I was inside taking this one.
Very nice bird. Very beautiful photo.
Thank you very much for your comment.
Wonderful looking bird, the Cardinal looks very much the part for a bird.
Thank you very much for your comment Pam. I love these birds.
She looks more cool, perhaps the role does reverse with birds?
The male is always in charge. She will eat sometimes what falls on the deck.
I have never seen one of those in my back yard but a beautiful bird.
You should have other birds I don’t have perhaps.
I don’t see many birds, but hawks and eagles here. Oh wait, many thousands of Magpies – I wonder if that is their real name.
Thank you very much for your comment. Yes they are magpies. They are in the crow family.
Sometimes animals are smarter than us.
Yes indeed I agree with you.
Usually when I see one gender of Northern Cardinal, the other is not far away.
Did you see this: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/02/09/science/cardinal-sex-gender.html
Same here but the male will not let the female eat at the feeder with him. It is like she is beneath him. She waits until he is done then she eats. Yes I did see tat story. Amazing.
