The birthplace of Nikola Tesla still stands in the village of Smiljan near Gospic in Lika, where a great scientist was born in 1856.
Nikola Tesla came from the Orthodox family. Father Milutin was a priest, and Georgina’s mother is also from the Orthodox priestly family of Mandic. In addition to the birthplace, there is also the Orthodox Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, in which Tesla’s father served the liturgy. A statue of a great scientist was built in the courtyard, leaving behind 112 patents and more than 700 various inventions.

The birthplace is part of the Tesla Memorial Center, which was opened in 2006.
He studied in the Czech Republic, worked in Budapest, Paris, Prague, Strasbourg, USA. A citizen of the world – that is also a great contribution to humanity. Thanks to him, our homes, villages, cities were illuminated.

At Christmas, exactly 75 years ago, one of the greatest minds of the world died, without whose inventions modern civilization would completely differ. Nikola Tesla passed away in a hotel room in New York. One of the greatest Serbs of all time was buried in the Serbian cathedral church of St. John Bogoslov in Manhattan. For the last ten years of his life, this scientist spent at a hotel in New York City, for which, in his honor, the New Yorker hotel reminded him at the door of his room that he had lived here as one of the great scientists.

Tesla’s family and the Yugoslav Embassy fought with US officials for the return of documents and personal belongings, because of the possible significance of one of his research. Finally, his sister Sava Kosanovic manages to come to a part of his personal belongings and this is now located at the Museum of Nikola Tesla in Belgrade.

The spread of civilisation may be likened to a fire; first, a feeble spark, next a flickering flame, then a mighty blaze, ever increasing in speed and power.
