I love this wrinkled paper effect. I draw the picture I wish to paint first on the paper in pencil. Then I wet the paper and wad it up as if to throw it away. I have to be very careful unwrapping it after that because wet paper can tear easily. Sometimes I do get a few tears around the edges or even in the middle but it never shows in the finished painting so I don’t worry about it much. Then I begin painting on the wet wrinkled paper and I get this lovely cracked glass look. When the paper is dry enough I work on the fine details. Layer upon layer, watercolor can achieve a very vibrant deep color if you keep working over subsequent dry layers. This Dahlia is one of my favorites.
Wow, such creative talent!
Enjoyed seeing this “in motion” painting. The effect is lively. Thanks for sharing your method.
That’s a really cool effect! I thought maybe you just painted it that way.
Oh, no. That would take a very long time to paint in all those cracks and crevices. It is a cool effect, though. Thanks for commenting.

Awesome
Thank you so much Woody!
Interesting technique. I wish I had your ability – if I ‘throw my work away’ – it’s stays thrown away! 🙂
Haha. I don’t really throw it away, of course. I do love the trashed technique though. Thanks for commenting.
