After the spring and summer rains, there is an unusual intensification of snail activity, that otherwise lead a secluded existence, hidden in bushes, trees, grassy areas, and some species even lead a predominantly underground life. Terrestrial snails are usually active at night, when the humidity is high, but they can also appear during the day to feed, especially when it rains.
Snails are mollusks that leave behind the famous traces of mucus, a transparent, sticky substance that helps snails a lot to gain the adhesion needed to move.
I met this creature this morning, while I allowed myself to break lockdown and take a short walk with the Maya.

My late husband and I were great animal lovers even snails were saved by us. Back in Latvia where we lived in the suburbs after heavy rain snails would come crawling out on the main road. When we would go to the store all along the way there would be snails. People would just trample them but when my husband and I came along we stooped down and picked up a snail and put it back into the grasses.
I have noticed it too, snails are remarkable creature.
I would think due to the way they move around it would be easier if the surface was wet.
That could be a reason. As far as I know, they leave behind a sticky substance, which helps them to move forward.

I did not know that. Thank you. Seagulls are waterfowl and I suppose they appreciate mollusks. I guess they eat more sea snails than land snails, don’t they?
I suspect like worms snails are often driven out of where they were during rain.

You are right. In dry periods, snails take refuge underground to keep their bodies wet, and when it rains, they come to the surface because otherwise they would drown in their shelters.
Maya smells them and then ignores them.

After a long time we had a wonderful walk. Maya liked it. I hardly brought her back home. And more importantly, I took pictures!🙂
i think Maya would say most importantly she was walked, and mom brought that stupid camera too. 🙂
Maya hates my camera. She was certainly not very happy when saw me taking pictures.
Dylan usually runs away when he sees the camera. I guess they are similar our dogs aren’t they?
Thank you for this information. I knew that snails had blue blood and that they had a living spell of about 15 years. They are interesting animals.

I read somewhere that snails come out after the rain because they move more easily to find a partner. I don’t know if it’s true or not! 🙂

I think snails move much easier on wet surfaces. That is why they appear after the rain.
Thanks! It’s one of the reasons. Snails are mollusks and they need an environment with a high degree of humidity to live. If their bodies are wet, snails can absorb the oxygen easier
