Moss rose , Portulaca grandiflora is at its best in summer, though it blooms late into winter if it receives few hours of direct sunshine daily. These plants make for great ground cover and come in various colors. However, the new trend is flowers in a mix of colors due to hybridization.
These plants are easy to grow, they bloom abundantly and don’t ask for much care. Moss rose is an annual but could comeback every year because of the tiny seeds that fall from it. However, at the end of the blooming season they need to be hard pruned and fertilized as they are prone to infections and diseases at this time. This way it is easy to keep them alive for years.
Bright sunshine and water is what these plants needs. It is a semi succulent, drought tolerant plant but it does not react badly to a bit of over watering like succulents do. Feeding them fortnightly during the flowering season helps keep them blooming for a long time.

Lovely flowers and colours…
They are unpretentious. There are them in huge pots in front of restaurants and bars.
Yeah they would do very well in Spain’s climate. we have them like that here as well.
I am surprised that the moss rose is not so common, 79% voted that way. Maybe it is only common to then tropics.
I just L O V E these Moss roses, Portulaca grandiflora, especially the one in the second photo. Thank you, Dawn.
Thank you Andre , i love them too. They are bright, beautiful and easy to grow.
They are such lovely flowers and great colors.
They are pretty ordinary flowers but they bring me so much joy.
Beautiful flowers. I have Portulaca on the terrace. They are really very unpretentious.
That is the word to describe them, unpretentious.
Wow, these are so beautiful! We have them here too, but I didn’t know their name.
Now you know 🙂 Actually the bright red and pink with white edges look even more beautiful. I forgot to add them to this post.
I love low maintenance plants, not sure if we have those here. They look so soft.
These are really low maintenance. These are what you would say thrive on neglect.
We don’t have moss roses here, those are quite beautiful.
I am surprised. In your kind of weather these would do very well.
i was expecting a discourse on the 1960s and the global rise of Flower Power.
(sorry, couldn’t help that)
Love the flower – the best flowers (outside only for us) are the ones that as you said “bloom with little to no care!”
Oh no, I thought of that while writing this but no this is pure unadulterated flower power. No special significance , just happiness and smiles of nature.
The moss rose does thrive on neglect and sunshine.
it is likely one that would do well in our yard. we’ve also had success with Day Lilles and pansies!
That is awesome None of my day lilies bloomed this year. Pansies though never do well in our climate.
we are adding daylillies to our mailbox this year!
I’ll wait for pictures to come.
