Flower Power – Summer is here

Moss rose , Portulaca grandiflora is at its best in summer,  though it blooms late into winter if it receives few hours of direct sunshine daily.  These plants make for great ground cover and come in various colors. However, the new trend is flowers in a mix of colors due to hybridization.

These plants are easy to grow, they bloom abundantly and don’t ask for much care. Moss rose is an annual but could comeback every year because of the tiny seeds that fall from it.  However, at the end of the blooming season they need to be hard pruned and  fertilized as they are prone to infections and diseases at this time. This way it is easy to keep them alive for years.

Bright sunshine and water is what these plants needs. It is a semi succulent, drought tolerant plant but it does not react badly to a bit of over watering like succulents do. Feeding them fortnightly during the flowering season helps keep them blooming for a long time.

  1. i was expecting a discourse on the 1960s and the global rise of Flower Power.

    (sorry, couldn’t help that)

Love the flower – the best flowers (outside only for us) are the ones that as you said “bloom with little to no care!”
