Dogs, a delicacy in China have now earned a new status in the country. They were listed as belonging to livestock but due to the emergence of coronavirus, they are now classified as pets. It is believed an animal in the wet market in Wuhan town acted as an intermediary host of the novel coronavirus.
It is estimated over 10 million dogs are slaughtered annually in China.
“As far as dogs are concerned, along with the progress of human civilisation and the public concern and love for animal protection, dogs have been specialised to become companion animals, and internationally are not considered to be livestock, and they will not be regulated as livestock in China,” the ministry said in a statement. Why do they eat dogs??? This is horrible.
It can result from poverty – unable to afford beef or other prefered meat or they’ve grown to like the taste of dogs. Some countries like the taste of donkeys.
I knew this went on and goes on in any Oriental country. In those countries, from speaking to Mum (born in China and european) Life in the Orient is extremely cheap.
I don’t judge these people because it is all about poverty and survival of the fitness. It is survival.
Sad, unfortunately and hard but true.
I understand what you mean. Sometimes, poverty drives people to do what they can to survive since not all and f us can live a lavish lifestyle.
I think since we’re accustomed to live with dogs as pets, it doesn’t make sense to slaughter them as pets.
I don’t like the killing of any small animal unfortunately it is sometimes necessary.
Maybe the most dangerous ones like rats and mice.
Such sad news I cannot bear to watch. I hope this stops soon.
It is sad news. I hope this will prevent further butchering of dogs.
Many good things have happened with this virus in that I feel that it is here with a purpose.
During dark periods, some good always emerge. This pandemic has.broight out some positive results.
This is one of the positive things that came with this virus. It saved the lives of many dogs!
You are right. Many dogs will be saved from the cruel slaughter.
I am glad that dogs will not be considered as food in China! If I lived on the ground floor, I would get a dog to help guard my property.
That is good news. You’re right. One would need a dog when living on the ground floor to guard their property and any invasion.
I was so happy reading this in the news last evening. I love dogs and cats as well.
It was positive news. I’m also fond of dogs and cats.
killing dogs or cats as food makes me very sad.
Me too including donkeys. I don’t feel good about it
