This is a New Zealand Bell bird of Tiritiri Matangi Island, a bird sanctuary.
This would not survive anywhere else in New Zealand except bird sanctuaries where they are protected from introduced predators. It likes honey water.

Yes, there are many islands and places that are bird sanctuaries in New Zealand.
I understand what you mean Although I am not in favour of birds being placed in cages we have love birds here that will only survive in cages or enclosed shelters.

On Tiritiri Matangi island the birds live free of cages, but the predators are removed and the people on the island plus Doc make sure it remains predator free..
that is such a sad situation. In the US we have new predators introduced into the Florida everglades. It has become a problem. Just because your pet python suddenly got to be 10 feet long and scary.
