Women in Quran: Do You Know The Women Named or Discussed in the Quran?

Generally, the Quran mentions women by their family references instead of by their own names which was an Arab social tradition at the time Quran was first revealed. There is exception of one woman who is clearly mentioned by her own name.

These women are mothers, wives, daughters and sisters who were companions and caregivers to prophets. There were queens and rulers too who have been mentioned in the Quran. Some wives of the prophets remained disbelievers and some women became symbols of piety and virtue while living among the worst of the disbelievers.

How well do you know the women mentioned or discussed in the Quran? Find out by trying this quiz.

  1. 9/12. It is very interesting to see how the mythologies of various traditions interact, with obvious borrowings as well as differences of emphasis.

  2. Very interesting quiz, Dawnwriter! I got 9 correct out of 12, which I’m quite pleased about. You have included in brackets, in many cases, the conventional English representation of the Hebrew versions of the names. If I may suggest, it might have made some of the answers more accessible if you had done that throughout. For example, Nuh is Noah; Lut is Lot; Hajjirah is Hagar; Ayub is Job; and Yaqoob is Jacob. Regardless, I enjoyed this fascinating quiz a whole lot 🙂

        • Eight months later, and I got exactly the same score 🙂 Once again, and really good quiz.
It is unlikely many here except me would recognise the original Hebrew names. But if the English names (all of which are derived from Hebrew) were all included it might well have aided others.
