Rodgers and Hammerstein were the most successful and influential musical theatre writing team of the twentieth century, creating a string of popular Broadway musicals in the 1940s and 1950s, initiating what is considered the Golden Age of musical theatre. Their output also included work for television and the big screen, taking on issues such as racism, sexism and classism in many of their works. Their shows continue to receive frequent revivals around the world, both professional and amateur.
