Yesterday I was out on my deck snapping photos of the bees on my sedum. That seems to be where most of the action is in my backyard right now. All of a sudden I heard what sounded like a swoosh sound fly into my tulip poplar tree. I thought oh my goodness, what was that. I had my camera so I started looking through the lens, from the deck. And I saw him looking back at me. I wasn’t close enough to get a crisp shot but I zoomed and got close enough to identify him. A Cooper’s Hawk. They are beautiful. They fly around looking for small mammals usually. I turn my heard when that happens. It was so cool to see this so unexpectedly. This is why you must always be ready when you are out in nature. Even in my backyard I never know what I will see. So, do you see him?
I was able to see his yellow eye. This means he is a juvenile. When he reaches adult stage, his eye will turn red. Now tell me that is not so cool.

Wooow Carol … you are the real master for a wonderful shot
I was at the right place at the right time, thanks.
You are a master at capturing just about anything. Love it
Just got lucky on this one. Thanks!
Great Idea Nice Post Thats Dear..
Thanks for your visit hamza.
A very nice picture and a commentary does not make Carol’s picture
You are kind, thank you lado.
It’s great to look at it again.
Thanks for your visit.
That’s a great shot of this hawk.
Thanks, could have been better but very unexpected.
I do agree with you. It is quite difficult to take a shot with this kind of animal
Amazing, I have never seen one of those before.
It was amazing Ann. I see them often but never get a pic. Hopefully I can get more.
How close are you with the eagle?
I was only a few feet away sitting on my deck. It was a hawk.
Do you have a high-end camera? I can’t take picture of a bird without it flying before I position myself.
Hello Waldo!
Great photo, very cool share…and I think I see him!
Thanks, he was trying to hide. 🙂
those raptors are wicked fast, but that’s to be expected; the slow ones were all selected against…
Indeed. It was an exciting moment to get a quick photo of him right here in my yard.
gotta feel bad for their prey- how do you dodge something dropping on you at that speed?
You don’t. They don’t stand a chance.
by the time the see the shadow, it is already too late
That is cool! I rarely see eagles in the wild, let alone see an eagle like that!
It was such a cool “swhishing” sound when he flew into the tree. They are very quiet, part of their survival skills. Absolutely amazing to see him. We have open fields all around. I see them from a distance and now they are building, so they are coming closer for food perhaps.
… Not only is the sound hard to describe, hard to spell too… swishing!
My imagination tries hard to chew and digest your explanation! It seems like it is really fascinating. Will he live near you?
They have always been in the corn fields and dairy farm behind the house. However with the construction going on this is bringing them closer.
