What is white noise?

Silence is a valuable commodity today. And for residents of megacities, it’s absolutely inadmissible luxury. But such a coveted perfect silence does not please. The absence of any sounds does not allow one to relax in the same way as the hum of the big road outside the window. That is why the idea arose to replace one noise with another, white.

White noise is artificial noise in which sound waves of different frequencies are distributed evenly and sound at the same volume. For example, you can hear it if you turn on the TV without an antenna. The gray-white “blizzard” on the screen will be accompanied by a classic white noise.

White noise is one of the most non-traumatic. Here are 3 reasons that make it comfortable for the human ear:

– All frequencies that a person is able to distinguish are evenly distributed, so this noise is not annoying.

– It has the ability to absorb all other sound waves.

– The general effect is that, against the background of a general sound cacophony, the monotonous “shhhhhh” sounds pleasant, soothing.

  1. Not my favorite, but it sounds like heavy rain, and many people find rain to be soothing. ?
It’s an interesting phenomenon though, I didn’t know it could cover/absorb all the other sounds.

  2. When I lived next to the ocean the sound of it made all the city traffic go away. I think it was the best white noise generator I ever had. It also came with a smell of ocean that I miss also.
