I have argued with my son about this question so many times. He was born into a family of artists. My dad was a great oil painter, my mother a singer with a record even. I paint and kind of sing.. lol.. I do have my moms voice.
I had two sons both can draw, paint and take photos really well. I believe they were born with a gift.
On the other hand one son thinks that anyone can paint if they learn how. He also thinks that a monkey can be a photographer in today’s world with the cell phones and auto functions on cameras. I really disagree with this. I think you have to know what to put in that little frame you have to work with and that this takes some kind of skill whether learned or inborn.
My 7 year old grandson took these photos, which raised these questions about Artists and Art in general. Take this poll and comment below.

A neat poll with insightful comments. Artists have talent and then work to increase their skills. One can be an artist at anything. Photographers trying to make a living at their craft face the same thing seamstresses face. People want to know if they sew and if they do would they please hem their pants for them!
You are correct, this is what I believe as well. I will show my son these comments, they are great aren’t they, and exactly what I wanted to hear. Your last comments are true, sad and funny. Or a doctor, I have this pain right here ___, can you look at it?
Great poll & photos! I think art is something someone is born with, but sometimes it can be learned as well. I taught myself how to do the graphic design stuff I do….and just keep practicing with taking photos.
Yes, exactly what I feel! You are born with it, then with learning you become an artist. You have an artists eye, or you wouldn’t be able to teach yourself. (I don’t think anyway) See I could be wrong and that’s where my son and I argue. I think I was born with the capabilities to draw what I see, learned to paint by taking a few painting classes, taught myself photography by tons of reading and studying, and practicing. I taught myself how to groom dogs by watching videos and reading books. Thoughts to ponder..
Photography is definitely an art, but not all pictures are artworks. The photo must reflect the feelings and visions that the photographer wants to share with others.
I totally agree with and couldn’t of put it better myself. In saying that, my grandson made some great art with the camera even for 7 years old.

Loved your poll Kim. I believe a lot of photographer’s believe what they do is just a hobby, not an art. I also do not look at myself as a photographer, since I do it for fun. But there is an art to it, whether you are born with it or it is learned.
Thank you Carol. An artist’s opinion. You are indeed a great artist. I could of put hobby in my choices, since you are 100% correct. Most artists no matter the medium do not consider their work art, or themselves artists. But then that raises another question, or thought… What is art? Grins.. I do think of your photography as art. You know what makes a great image no matter what medium is used, and if flows through into your photography. I believe you were probably born with it, and took it from there. Am I correct?
