I have two different video camera/speaker systems in my house today mostly because I do a lot of online meetings. Webex from work, GoToMeeting and Skype Meetings as well as Zoom Meetings. As “the reality” of networks continues to improve the reality of video conferencing continues to expand. Now, there are times when I don’t turn my local camera on, but there are times I do. Mostly it has to do with the level of the camera in my office. My office has a mess issue at times. I do at times move the camera, so I don’t have to see the reflection of my mess. I have over the years cleaned the mess as well. Once I get a couple of other projects done, I will do a spring cleaning!
But today’s technology conversation is around video conferencing. Skype, lets you do interpersonal conversations using Video. As does Jabber, the Cisco competitor to Skype. Of the two (I’ve used them both) as well as the meeting products (WebEx and the Teams product now used to be Skype for Business meetings). Overall the quality of the two laptop/desktop/mobile device technologies is good. When it comes to meetings, Teams vs. Webex my opinion has changed recently. I used Teams, (OCS, Lynx, Skype for Business) as my primary online meeting system for most of the last 15 years. I don’t use Teams now as often as I use Webex with Zoom now a close third.
I have to say, based on my personal usage Webex is better. I wouldn’t have said that a year ago, two years ago or even possibly six months ago. The difference between the two meeting system is large. Zoom is similar to both, and I picked it up quickly. Bluejeans is the same way; I am excited about the Mio meeting system when it goes into beta because it will offer on the fly translation of other languages. But the tools, capabilities, and functionality within Webex make it a much better product in my estimation overall. As more and more companies embrace the reality of work-from-home, the reality of web meetings will grow. As you consider what and how you are using the meeting, I recommend giving Webex a try!

I will consider this tool. As of now, I haven’t done any online meeting yet. But I do a Facebook video call, oftentimes with my daughter who is just a room away and my sister who lives in another city. Perhaps we can try having a conference to check the speed of the internet.
Always interesting, it is nice to be able to see the person’s face as you talk to them~
are these all VOIP apps or something else?
All VoIP/web meeting applications. The number continues to increase!
d’oh! I capitalized the O and ruined the acronym…
I’ve seen it both ways so it doesn’t matter. VOIP is often used by NIST. VoIP is used by Cisco and Microsoft.
I wonder which convention is more proper
Great people can have on line meetings never done it
I remember when web meetings were first a thing, they were awful. They are a lot better now
I used a lot of this technology when I was still at work. Now that I’m covered up, I do not use much.
I can understand that – 🙂
