The New Craze – Cactus Water

The latest thing that has caught peoples fancy in 2020 is to remain hydrated. Apparently a number of people have adopted this as their new year resolution. Thank goodness I don’t have to worry about that, I drink about 6-8 liters of water everyday. I have been used to this as even a little bit of dehydration can cause me to feel terrible.

People have suddenly  ‘discovered’ coconut water, aloevera juice and cactus juice. These have been the source of natural medicine for centuries. But lets get to the cactus water – Cactus water is trending now as it provides all the electrolytes the body needs and athletes consume it by the tank loads. It is the biggest thing to hit the natural beverage market apparently.

Cactus water is made from the juice of prickly pears. Apparently you have to cut the fruit in half and add it to a pan of water , aloww it to boil for 3- 45 miniutes and extract the tea. This tea/water can be stored in the fridge for up to three days says one health column Google suggested I read.

The antioxidants in the cactus fruits can take care of the free radicals that float around in our body causing cellular damage, chronic inflammation etc.

This drink provides a good quantity of potassium and Magnesium which help in electrolyte balance, heart function and muscle control.

Aloe vera juice has been recommended for centuries for ulcerative coitus by advocates of natural medicine for centuries . Studies have proved that cactus water has helped slow down this condition. Cactus water like aloevera juice is excellent skin tonic when applied directly on the skin. It is said to reduce the scar marks too in the long run.

Cactus water is also touted to help in liver damage and type 2 diabetes. However, there isn’t enough research done to prove this and treatment for these ailments per say.

Is there anything new under the sun – everything new is just an old practice packaged and presented in a newer and more expensive form.

  1. We have a massive growth of cactus (prickly pears) around our property. The fruit are so prickly that you have to wear thick pvc gloves. To eat the fruit fresh, cut it in half using fork to hold it down while cutting it with a sharp knife. Scoop the sweet flesh with a spoon.

  2. Very interesting read! I have tried prickly pear jam, but never the water. Staying hydrated is something vital, but it’s difficult sometimes to find the right balance between enough and too much water, as even water in excess could have sme negative consequences.
