Never thought I would see a Pukako so close to home. Here it is in a tree in the front garden.
This Pukako is after any food I give to the birds, and it is a dainty eater, picks up its food with its large feet and eats from its foot.
I even saw it having a bath this morning.
Apparently in Bucklands Beach & Howick, the sight of Pukakos by homes is an everyday thing.

Such a wonderful capture and a beautiful bird!
Thanks so much Ellie glad you like our Pukako
Great shot. I haven’t seen this bird yet. It looks very special.
This is a New Zealand version of a Swamp Hen however it can fly and here we see about 2 of them in the area. Thanks Vidocka

i truly love it when there is a surprise visitor in the yard! As always a great picture. I remember three years ago when you did the NZ bird of the day series!!!!!
Thanks Doc, I may continue that soon. Hope to do some ecological studies of my own around this area as well.

That bird looks sooo strange to me. I have never seen such a kind.
The Pukako is graceful but comical and funny at the same time. Yes, it would look strange to someone who hasn’t seen it before. thank Introvert.
Good to learn it’s not an agrressive bird.
Your birds are always so exotic looking. Great shot!
Thanks Carol, this is an amazing bird and since getting visits from it, I have grown more fond of the Pukako.
