Juicy Tangelos

Have you heard of a Tangelo? We buy the Honeyballs and they are delicious. Small like a tangerine but seedless.

A deliciously sweet fruit most often mistaken for an unusually shaped orange, the tangelo is a bright red-orange hybrid of a tangerine and grapefruit. With an unmistakable sweetness countered by a tart aftertaste (courteous of its grapefruit ancestor), tangelos are the size of a fist and topped by a characteristic knob. Alternatively known as Honeyballs, tangelos are seedless, easy to peel and have a thick skin similar that of oranges.

This bowl full of Tangelos is on my countertop for a good healthy snack.

    • Not a huge difference:

Tangerine: Tangerines are small citrus fruits with deep red-orange skins that are thin and easy to peel.
Clementine: Clementines are small and light orange, with a soft but thick skin.
Tangerine: Tangerines are not as tart as oranges, but not as sweet as mandarins either.
Clementine: Clementines are the sweetest of the mandarins, and seedless.

        • Mandarins
Mandarins originated from southern China where they were cultivated for more than 3,000 years. They were initially pursued for their fragrance and reserved for royalty and the wealthy. Mandarins are usually eaten raw and they make a convenient snack food as they peel easily and can be broken into pieces without needing a knife.

Tangelos are a cross between a mandarin and a grapefruit. The first recorded example of a tangelo tree was grown in the late 19th century in the United States. The fruit looks and peels like a mandarin but has slightly more acid tartness thanks to the grapefruit. Mineolas are the key variety of tangelo grown in Australia. They are tasty fresh as well as in marmalade and cordial.
