Grand Central Station or Grand Central Terminal is at 42nd Street and Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, New York. It is the third busiest train station in North America, a National Historic Landmark and one of the world’s ten most visited attractions. 21.9 million people visited in 2013, not including train and subway passengers. There is a subway connection at Grand Central – 42nd Street.
The Main Concourse has been used in many movies and television programs. Opened in 1913, the Terminal covers 48 acres and has 44 platforms…more platforms than any other railroad station in the world. It serves 67 million passengers a year; and at the morning rush hour a train arrives every 58 seconds! The Main Concourse is 275 feet long, 120 feet wide and 125 feet high. The barrel vault ceiling has a celestial mural.
There are ten globe-shaped chandeliers weighing 800 pounds each; and each chandelier contains 110 bulbs. There are two marble water fountains. The marble and brass 18-sided information booth is topped by the iconic four-sided brass clock. There was once a theater in the Terminal.
The Main Concourse is used as a gathering venue, for political events, for memorials, celebrations, large parties and New Year’s celebrations. There are special exhibits, restaurants and retail spaces. Vanderbilt Hall is used as an event space.
When I was around twelve years old my parents and I visited New York City. Since we didn’t have a car and traveled by train, we must have come through Grand Central Station; but I unfortunately do not remember it.

The first time I saw grand central station I was late for a meeting and didn’t even look up. The second time we arrived on the Amtrak Accelor and really enjoyed walking through Grand Central Station.

After my package tour of the US I spent time with friends and family including a fortnight at my niece in New Jersey. I so wanted to watch a play on Broadway Street and to get there we took a train.
We traveled a lot by train when I was young…no car.
Seen it only in photos and movies. Would love to go one day.
